Bees for Development

Promoting sustainable livelihoods through beekeeping

Bees for Development provides support on all aspects of beekeeping, including technical ‘how-to’ guides, and advice on meeting fair trade, organic and international trade criteria.

Beekeeping is an effective way for people living in rural areas with few financial resources to create sustainable livelihoods. Honey is a valuable food and marketable commodity. Beeswax and pollen are other useful products from bees. The most vital service provided by bees is pollination: this leads to better crop yields and ensures the maintenance of biodiversity.

The Anglo American Group is a long-time supporter of the Bees for Development Trust. The funding has helped to create more information resources that are sent free of charge to beekeepers and projects in developing countries.

Bees for Development has produced booklets and posters on beekeeping and rural livelihoods, explaining the rationale behind using apiculture (beekeeping) as a tool for development, and why pollination is important for crop production. The booklets and posters, published in English, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish editions, have been distributed worldwide.

For several years, support from the Anglo American Group Foundation has also enabled Bees for Development to prepare and add a considerable volume of material to its website.
