Care International
CARE is a leading international humanitarian organisation, focusing on the fight against poverty. Working with countries around the world, CARE helps more than 65 million people every year. CARE’s long-term programmes tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty and they aim to be among the first to respond when disaster strikes.
CARE believes that a business can uphold not only the rights of their workforce, but also the rights of communities. With this in mind CARE International UK has been working with Anglo American since 2003 to improve Anglo’s ability to respond to the needs of communities.
For example, in the state of Goias, Brazil, Anglo American and CARE are collaborating around Anglo’s Barro Alto operations to stimulate the local economy, improve education and encourage increased community participation. This project sits alongside a second initiative in Brazil in the Sao Paulo suburb of Perus. There, the Anglo American Group Foundation has provided funding for CARE’s economic and social inclusion project which will provide 1,680 young people with the skills to enable them to start up small businesses.
In Zimbabwe, support from the Anglo American Group Foundation has funded a number of projects, covering issues such as water harvesting, food security and more recently provided funding for the cholera relief programme. The funding has also supported CARE’s microfinance programme, by creating 400 savings groups and training 1400 families in the selection, planning and management of income generating activities.
CARE’s aim is to enhance the considerable role the private sector plays within the development agenda and the potential companies provide for people to earn a living, sell their produce, access services and lift themselves out of poverty. CARE believes that collaboration with companies such as Anglo American can result in innovative solutions to poverty.
