Pro Mujer is a leading women’s development, health and microfinance social enterprise providing clients in Latin America with a set of integrated services: financial services including small loans, insurance and savings; business and empowerment training; and high-quality, low-cost primary health care. Founded in Bolivia in 1990, Pro Mujer also operates in Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru and is headquartered in New York City. Over the past 23 years, Pro Mujer has disbursed more than US$1 billion in small loans and reached more than 1.6 million women and their 6.4 million children and family members. Today, more than 2,000 Pro Mujer employees support 270,000 women across the five countries. Pro Mujer understands that health and poverty are deeply intertwined. For this reason, providing health services has been a key aspect of the organization’s programming since it was founded. Recent demographic shifts in Latin America have resulted in an increased prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Chronic illness is now the leading cause of death in the region and afflicts Pro Mujer clients at alarmingly high rates. In addition, these conditions are largely under-addressed by the public health sector: prevention and behavior change are crucial in this field and are notoriously difficult to accomplish.
To address these pressing needs, Pro Mujer is testing and scaling an innovative health care model which is designed to be client-driven, market-based, and financially sustainable. The program offers three distinct service lines which are offered on-site when women are already accessing financial services. Some screenings, along with education and social marketing campaigns, are provided universally to all clients to guarantee coverage and impact. Other services may be purchased at below-market prices through a pre-paid package which can be financed with a microfinance loan or savings or on a pay-per-service basis. This innovative design addresses many key barriers to accessing preventive health: financing to minimize impact on cash flow, creating convenience to lower opportunity costs, bundling and cross-subsidizing to promote usage of preventive services, integrating service platforms at scale to lower prices, and delivering dynamic educational campaigns to promote behavior change.
The Anglo American Group Foundation is supporting the implementation of the sustainable health program in Peru with a contribution of $800,000. The project will provide more than 60,000 women entrepreneurs with access to health training and counseling sessions and direct services including screenings for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and breast and cervical cancer.
